Protect Yourself (from spam and scammers)

Some basic rules

  1. 1. Use several email addresses. Free email addresses are abundant. Have a 'garbage' email address that you can use to attract spam, or use for situations when you think responding to an offer will generate lots of spam. Don't check this address, or check it infrequently.

  2. 2. Dont' reply to spam. DUH. Yet I have to emphasize it. If all spam was ignored it would stop.

  3. 3. Don't post your personal information online. Watch what you post on facebook, myspace, or in forums. Someone who has enough time, (like a scammer) can put together a fairly accurate profile if you leave a lot of clues online.

  4. 4. Don't store your credit card or important numbers, passwords or any other info on a public computer.

    5. Lock up your laptop. Laptops are the 'Gone in 60 seconds' of the computer world.

  5. 6. Use a spam filter. Know how to add to it.

    7. Use a reputable service like eBay, that has checks and balances in place to stop scams. This doesn't mean you won't still get cheated. It's a cruel online world.

  6. 8. Most scammers are far away from you, geographically. The internet is what allows them to get close. If you're on the internet, be on your guard.

    9. Know how to spot a scam.
